Saint Mary's Field

Right on Fishguard's doorstep, Saint Mary's Field is a proper little nature reserve that punches above its weight. It's the sort of place you can slip into between breakfast and a proper lunch without needing to plan the day around it. The grassland and scrub attract birds and butterflies, and if you're into spotting species, this is a decent spot for it - though don't expect dramatic wildlife encounters. A short walk through the reserve takes you past rough pasture and coastal vegetation, with views toward the bay that remind you why Pembrokeshire draws people in the first place. It's free to wander, which is always a plus. Best in spring and early summer when the wildflowers are out and migrating birds drop in. Most people spend thirty minutes to an hour here, depending on whether you're just passing through or actually trying to identify that warbler. Families with young children will find it manageable but a bit low-key for an afternoon's entertainment. Serious birdwatchers and botanists will get more out of it than casual walkers. If you're staying at Fishguard Holiday Park or Tregroes Caravan Camping, it's an easy morning addition to your plans - close enough that you don't need the car. The real value is as a warm-up activity before heading deeper into Pembrokeshire's coastal walks. On its own, it's not a reason to make the trip, but as part of a wider holiday it works well.
