Saint Mary the Virgin

The church sits quietly on the outskirts of Henley-on-Thames, the sort of place you'd stumble past if you weren't paying attention. Saint Mary the Virgin is a proper medieval building, all flint and stone with the kind of low ceilings that make you duck instinctively as you step inside. The interior has that specific smell - old wood, worn stone, candle wax - that transports you back centuries in about two seconds flat.

What you're looking at is genuinely old. The main structure dates back to the 12th century, though there have been additions and repairs over the following 800 years or so. The chancel has some lovely detailing if you look up, and there's a real sense of the place having been used properly - not a museum piece, but an actual functioning church where people still worship.

This isn't a destination in itself, frankly. You won't need more than twenty minutes inside, and there's nothing to "do" in the activity sense. But if you're staying at one of the camping or glamping sites in the area - Orchard View Farm, Wingbury Farm, or Hill Farm Camping are all within five miles - it's well worth a quick visit on a morning walk. Henley-on-Thames itself has enough pubs and riverside walks to make a proper day of it.

Historically minded types, or anyone interested in how a parish church actually functions rather than how it's presented in guidebooks, will get the most from it. Admission should be free, as is typical for working churches, though you might find it locked outside service times. There's no charge to look around the graveyard either, which has some interesting older stones if you fancy a bit of gentle exploring.
