Saint Gomonda's Church Roche

Perched on a rocky outcrop near Stenalees, Saint Gomonda's Church is a proper oddity - a medieval structure that clings to its granite tor like it's been there since time began. The church itself is small and unassuming, but the location is what gets you: standing on elevated ground with views across the Cornish landscape, you feel genuinely isolated from the modern world.

It's a walker's destination rather than a sit-down-and-linger affair. The approach involves a bit of scrambling over rough ground, which adds to the appeal if you're the outdoorsy type but might frustrate those expecting a casual stroll. Allow twenty minutes to reach it and another thirty if you want to properly explore the churchyard and soak in the surroundings.

The church itself dates back centuries, though it's modest inside - whitewashed walls, a handful of pews, the sort of place where you can almost hear the centuries echoing off stone. History enthusiasts will appreciate the genuinely ancient fabric of it all, whereas families with young children might find it a quick stop rather than a full morning.

If you're based at Mena Farm or Trewan Hall - both excellent spots within a few miles - this makes a worthwhile detour on a circular walk. It's not a destination in itself, but combined with the surrounding moorland and nearby villages, it slots neatly into a proper day out exploring mid-Cornwall's quieter corners.
