Hensbarrow Downs

Standing at 262 metres above sea level, this distinctive white landscape of clay spoil heaps creates one of Cornwall's most unusual vistas. The bright chalky peaks rise dramatically from the surrounding countryside near Stenalees, creating an almost lunar terrain that's impossible to mistake for anywhere else in Britain.

Walkers and photographers will find plenty to explore across the undulating downs, though the going can be quite dusty on dry days. The views from the higher points stretch across mid-Cornwall towards the coast, offering a perspective you simply won't get elsewhere in the county. That said, it's not for everyone - the industrial heritage means this isn't your typical Cornish beauty spot.

Families staying at nearby parks like Eden Valley Holiday Park or East Crinnis Holiday Park will find it makes an interesting morning out, particularly with older children who might appreciate the geological story. The terrain is free to explore, though proper walking boots are essential as the loose surface can be tricky underfoot.

Best combined with a visit to the nearby Eden Project, these downs offer a fascinating contrast between Cornwall's industrial past and its natural splendour. Allow a couple of hours if you plan to walk the higher sections properly.
