The narrow lane leading to Sloley's St Bartholomew's feels properly removed from the world, even though Wroxham is just a few miles away. This is a working parish church, medieval in its bones, sitting quietly in the Norfolk countryside where most visitors would drive straight past without a second glance.

Inside, it's got the real thing - medieval wall paintings that have survived centuries of whitewash and neglect, timber work that speaks to actual craftsmen rather than modern restoration, and the kind of silence you don't find in busier attractions. The chancel arch is worth the visit alone if you're into that sort of thing. It's not flashy. There's no cafe, no gift shop, no interpretation panels telling you what to think. Just a church doing what it's been doing for about 600 years.

If you're church-crawling through Norfolk, this one rewards the detour. Serious history types will find genuine medieval fabric here rather than the sanitised versions you get elsewhere. Families with young children might find it a bit too quiet unless they're genuinely interested in old buildings. Allow 20 minutes, maybe 45 if you're the sort who reads every inscription.
