Saint Annes North Beach

The golden stretch of sand at Saint Annes North Beach feels properly separate from the madness of Blackpool just up the coast. It's a working beach - you'll see fishing boats, proper maritime activity - which gives it character that you won't find at the more touristy spots. The promenade behind is lined with Victorian buildings and independent cafes rather than arcade joints, which makes a refreshing change.

Walking the length of it takes a good hour if you're not rushing. The beach itself is firm sand, decent for families with young kids who want space to run about without the crowds. At high tide it narrows considerably, so check the timing before you go. The pier at Saint Annes is worth a wander too - smaller and less frantic than Blackpool's, with actual arcade charm rather than just chaos.

Historically minded visitors will appreciate that this stretch played a role in Lancashire's development as a seaside resort, though it's never had the fame of its neighbour. That's rather the point. You get the beach experience without fighting for space.

If you're staying at Sea View Caravan Park or Ribby Hall Village - both within easy driving distance - Saint Annes North Beach makes for a solid morning or afternoon out. Free to access, obviously. Go on a weekday morning in summer if you can, before the day-trippers from Blackpool wander down. Wind can be fierce, even when it looks calm.
