Saint Agatha's

The church sits quietly in the village of Coates, just outside Pulborough, and it's one of those places that rewards you for bothering to find it. Saint Agatha's is a proper medieval parish church - the sort with a sturdy Norman tower and thick stone walls that have stood for nearly a thousand years. Inside, the space is intimate rather than grand, with original features that speak to centuries of quiet worship rather than flashy restoration.

This is fundamentally a church for people who actually like churches. If medieval architecture, brass rubbings, and the odd bit of stained glass get you going, you'll spend a genuine hour here poking about. The setting is genuinely pleasant too - the churchyard has that slow, English quality that makes you want to sit on a bench for longer than you planned. Families with very young children might find it a bit samey after ten minutes, but older kids who've caught the history bug will find plenty to examine.

It's free to visit, though hours aren't officially published online - call ahead or try your luck during daylight. You're near Pulborough, so it slots nicely into a walking holiday. Wakestone & Wild Glamping (2.8 miles away) and Graffham Camping site (3.5 miles) both put you in proper walking territory, and this church makes for a worthwhile detour on a countryside ramble rather than a destination in itself.
