Sailmaker Art Studios & Gallery

The converted Victorian sailmaker's loft in Kingsbridge holds work from local artists who actually use the space as studios - you can watch them at it sometimes, which beats the usual gallery experience. Sailmaker Art Studios is spread across two floors of what was genuinely a working sail loft, and the industrial bones of the place (original beams, creaky floorboards, proper gloomy corners) matter as much as what's hung on the walls.

You'll find paintings, prints, jewellery, textiles and sculpture - the sort of rotating display where something speaks to you one visit and completely different work greets you the next. It's not massive, so allow 45 minutes to an hour unless you're the type who reads every artist statement. The space works particularly well for anyone interested in how artists actually make things rather than just the finished product.

It's free to wander in, and genuinely worth popping into if you're spending time in Kingsbridge. The town itself isn't a destination in its own right, but if you're based at one of the excellent camping spots nearby - Wilton Farm is just 2.3 miles away, or Karrageen only three miles - it's a proper local thing to do on a quieter afternoon. The surrounding area is South Devon proper: estuaries, sea views, proper walking territory. This works best as part of a wider mooch around town rather than a standalone reason to detour.
