Ryton Coppice

The woodland around Ryton Coppice, just outside Newent, is proper walking country. Ancient coppice woodland means dense canopy and plenty of shade, which makes it lovely on a hot day but can feel a bit murky in winter. You're looking at mixed deciduous trees - oak, ash, hazel - the sort of place where the forest floor is thick with leaf litter and moss. It's not a showpiece woodland with marked trails and visitor facilities, so come prepared to navigate yourself or follow the bridleways that crisscross the area.

This is for walkers and woodland enthusiasts rather than families wanting something quick. Bring proper boots; it gets boggy after rain. A couple of hours is realistic for a decent circuit, though you can easily spend longer if you're a birdwatcher or just fancy wandering. The coppice is working woodland in parts, so you might come across freshly cut sections or management work in progress - that's the real forest, not some manicured nature reserve.

Staying at one of the nearby parks like Pelerine Caravan & Camping Site or Cwtch Cabins & Camping puts you in walking distance, and you've got the wider Forest of Dean landscape to explore as well. Newent itself is a proper market town with decent pubs, which beats the isolation of some forest locations. The Coppice works best as part of a longer woodland-walking holiday rather than a standalone day trip. Worth it if you're actually into forests rather than Instagram backdrops.
