Russley Park

The wetland paths at Russley Park wind through reed beds and open water in a way that makes you forget you're still in Oxfordshire. It's a proper nature reserve - the kind where you're more likely to spot a marsh harrier than another human on a weekday afternoon.

You're here for the birds mainly. Winter brings visiting wildfowl by the thousand, spring gets the warblers going, and there's always something moving in the reeds if you've got patience and decent binoculars. The walking is gentle - flat trails mostly, nothing that'll knacker you out. Allow a couple of hours if you're serious about it, less if you just fancy a quick stroll.

Families with older kids who can manage a bit of quiet time will get on well here. Young children might find it a touch dull after half an hour - there's no playground drama, just the marsh and the sky. Birdwatchers will be in their element. If you're staying at Evelyns Garden Glamping just down the road, it's well worth the short drive over.

The nearest proper village is Botswicky Copse, though there's not much there beyond a pub. Russley itself is fairly low-key - no visitor centre shenanigans, no gift shop. Just the reserve doing its thing. Check ahead for opening times and whether there's a small entrance fee, as details are thin on the ground. It's the sort of place that rewards a bit of local knowledge.
