Russellsend Coppice

The forest floor here is carpeted in moss and fallen leaves - proper woodland walking territory just outside Newent. Russellsend Coppice is a working woodland, not a manicured country estate, which means you get the real thing: dense tree coverage, uneven paths, and that satisfying crunch underfoot when conditions are dry.

It's the sort of place that rewards a slow amble rather than a quick tick-off. The coppice woodland management means you'll find areas of different ages and densities, creating natural variation as you walk. Bring decent boots though - after rain this becomes slippery work, and the paths aren't maintained to any particular standard.

Best for walkers who like their nature a bit rough around the edges. Families with restless kids might find it a bit samey after an hour, but anyone after some proper woodland time will appreciate the peace. No facilities that we're aware of, so come prepared.

The location works well if you're based at one of the nearby parks - Pelerine Caravan & Camping Site is only 3.8 miles away, as is Cwtch Cabins & Camping at 5 miles. Makes for a straightforward morning or afternoon walk while you're in the area. Newent itself is close enough for supplies, though you'll want to sort your kit before you arrive. Aim for autumn when the light filters through differently, or winter when the wood feels properly atmospheric.
