Rush Hill

Rush Lake sits just east of Great Yarmouth, a proper slice of Norfolk's quieter side. It's a freshwater lake surrounded by reed beds and open water - the sort of place where you'll actually hear birdsong instead of fairground noise. Walkers and birdwatchers get the most from it; the footpaths around the perimeter are straightforward and the water attracts all manner of wildfowl year-round.

You're looking at a couple of hours maximum if you're doing the full circuit, though it's easy to stretch that with a sit-down and a pair of binoculars. The reed beds are genuinely worth the effort come spring and autumn when migrating birds pass through. Kids might find it a bit slow unless they're keen on spotting things, but it's free to access and there's car parking at the head of the walk.

Stay at Hickling Campsite just up the road and you've got immediate access to this and the broader Broads system without needing to drive far. Waxham Sands and Golden Beach are within spitting distance too if you want something with more facilities. The lake works best as a morning outing before heading into Great Yarmouth proper or mixing it in with other Broads walks nearby. It won't blow your mind on its own, but it's exactly what the Broads do well - quiet water, good walking, and proper Norfolk character. Don't expect dramatic views; expect peace.
