Norfolk Wildlife Trust – Hickling Broad and Marshes nature reserve

Hickling Broad is where the Norfolk Broads actually feel wild. You're not on a manicured tourist route here - this is a proper nature reserve run by the Norfolk Wildlife Trust, and it shows. The broad itself stretches out in front of you, reed beds thick enough to swallow a boat whole, and the bird life is genuinely exceptional. Marsh harriers quarter the reeds, bitterns boom in spring, and you'll spot swallowtail butterflies in summer if you're lucky.

The visitor centre sits right at the water's edge near Great Yarmouth, and from there you can walk the trails that thread through the marshes and along the water. Some paths are boardwalked, others are proper muddy affairs depending on the season. Allow two to three hours if you're serious about spotting something interesting - rushing through defeats the point entirely. Binoculars aren't optional here; they're essential.

Birdwatchers will absolutely love it, and photographers too. Families with restless toddlers might find the pace a bit slow. Spring and autumn are peak migration times when the place really hums with activity, though winter can be spectacular for raptors.

If you're based at one of the nearby campsites - Hickling Campsite is barely a mile away, or Norfolk Broads Country Park slightly further - this is a brilliant way to understand what the Broads actually are. It's not a day-tripper experience. It's genuinely absorbing if you give it time.
