Runner Plantations

You won't find Runner Plantations on every Lancashire tourism board, which is rather a shame. It's a proper woodland walk just outside Southport, the sort of place locals know about but visitors often miss. The forest itself is pleasant enough - mature trees, decent paths, and enough green to feel like you've actually left town rather than just walked five minutes out of it.

Walkers will get the most from it. There's nothing fancy here, no visitor centre or gift shop, just trees and paths that wind through quietly. You can spend an hour here easily, or stretch it to two if you're not rushing. Families with younger kids might find it a bit samey after a while - there's no playground or riverside feature to break things up. But if you've got teenagers who'll actually walk without complaining, it's worth a go.

The forest works well as a side venture if you're based at one of the nearby parks like Riverside or Leisure Lakes, both within a kilometre. It's the sort of place to fill an afternoon when the seaside at Southport has lost its charm or the weather's turned a bit dull. Don't expect woodland drama or rare species - this is practical Lancashire greenery, doing the job it's meant to do.

Bring decent shoes. The paths can be muddy, particularly after rain, and there's not much by way of facilities once you're in. Free to access and open year-round, it's genuinely decent for stretching your legs without any fuss.
