Runcorn Hill Park

The views from Runcorn Hill are worth the climb alone. This modest nature reserve sits just outside Frodsham and gives you proper panoramic stuff across the Mersey estuary and the surrounding Cheshire countryside. On a clear day you can see for miles - industrial landscape mixed with green belt, which sounds odd but actually works.

It's a straightforward walk up from the car park, nothing technical, though the path gets a bit steep towards the summit. The reserve itself is fairly compact, so don't expect to spend all afternoon here. An hour is realistic for a decent look around, perhaps two if you're the type to sit on a bench with binoculars watching for birds. The grassland supports some decent wildlife - you might spot common lizards if you're lucky, and the birdwatching's decent for a Cheshire spot.

Families with younger kids might find it a quick affair - the hill climb entertains them more than the landscape itself. Older walkers and serious nature enthusiasts will get more from it, particularly if you visit during spring migration season when the birds show up properly. The reserve is free to access, which is always worth knowing.

Combine it with Frodsham itself for lunch, then crack on with something else. Decent value, no faffing about with admission fees.
