Rubha Na Meise Baine, dun site

The walk to Rubha Na Meise Baine takes you out towards the tip of a headland on Islay, where Iron Age folk once built a dun - a fortified settlement that's now just tumbled stone and archaeology. What remains is subtle: earthwork banks, the ghost of defensive walls, scattered rubble. It's not dramatic like Skara Brae, but that's rather the point.

You'll need decent boots and an Ordnance Survey map or a GPS app, because signage is non-existent and the site blends into the landscape without fanfare. The actual draw is the walk itself - windswept headland with views back across the Sound of Islay, rough grass, the Atlantic doing its thing in the distance. Allow a good two hours from Isle of Islay town, more if you're properly poking about in the ruins.

This works best for archaeology enthusiasts and serious walkers rather than casual visitors or families with young kids. There's nowhere to shelter, no tea shop, nothing soft about it. But if you're camping at Islay Glamping Pods and fancy something beyond the usual loch trails, this scratches a proper exploratory itch. The dun itself dates back around 2,000 years, which beats most things you'll see on the island. Free, of course - it's just headland and history.
