RSPB Venn Ottery Common

The Otter Valley runs through this stretch of Devon like a ribbon of proper wildlife theatre, and RSPB Venn Ottery Common is where you go to actually see it happen. It's not a manicured visitor centre with a cafe and gift shop - this is the real thing. Wetland and heath, managed specifically for ground-nesting birds and the creatures that depend on them.

You're looking at a working conservation area rather than a destination in the traditional sense. Bring binoculars. The birdwatching here is genuine - curlew, redshank, lapwing - though you'll need patience and quiet shoes. It's the sort of place where standing still for twenty minutes actually pays off. Families with young kids might find it a bit testing for attention spans; walkers and serious twitchers will get hours of it.

The landscape itself is understated. Rolling grassland, ditches, scrub. Not dramatic, but that's entirely the point. The birds don't care about dramatic. West Hill sits just a mile or so away if you need supplies, but the real appeal here is the solitude and the genuine chance to see something wild going about its business.

With Cuckoo Down Farm Glamping just 1.3 miles off and Ladram Bay Holiday Park nearby, you could easily base yourself for a few days exploring the valley. Go early morning in spring or early summer for the best chance of seeing breeding birds. Absolutely free to access, and worth the detour if you're serious about getting away from the honeypots.
