Gittisham Roman Fort

Gittisham Fort sits near West Hill in Devon as little more than earthworks and scattered stone - there's no reconstructed gatehouse or visitor centre to make it feel grandiose. But that's precisely why it works. This was a proper military installation from around 55 AD, strategically positioned to control the Exe Valley, and walking the site you can still make out the fort's layout if you know what you're looking for: the defensive ditches, the rampart lines, the ghost of Roman administration carved into the Devon landscape.

It appeals most to archaeology enthusiasts and serious history walkers rather than casual tourists. Families with young kids might find it underwhelming - there's no interpretive signage to tell you what you're standing on, and once you've circled the perimeter (takes maybe thirty minutes), there's not much more to extract from it. Bring a guidebook or do your homework beforehand if you want to get real value from a visit.

The site appears to be free and accessible year-round, though formal opening hours aren't confirmed. Allow an hour if you're thorough, less if you're just passing through.
