RSPB Radipole Lake

A sprawl of reed beds and open water just outside Weymouth, Radipole Lake is one of Dorset's best spots for spotting birds without needing binoculars or patience in equal measure. The RSPB has done proper work here - there are viewing screens dotted around the lake edge, boardwalks that keep you dry and out of the way, and information boards that actually tell you what you're looking at instead of just saying "water bird".

Winter is peak time. That's when you'll see wigeon, pintail, and shoveler in numbers that make the place feel alive. Spring and autumn migrations bring through unexpected visitors - I've heard folk mention seeing cranes and bitterns, though you'll need decent timing and luck. Summer's quieter but the breeding pairs give it a different energy.

It's free, which is excellent. You can do a quick circuit in 45 minutes or hang about for two hours if you're the type to watch for movement in the reeds. Families with kids will manage fine on the boardwalks - nothing taxing - though young children might lose interest fast unless there's something actively splashing about.

Stay at Chesil Beach Lodge Park or Haven Littlesea, both within a few miles, and Radipole fits naturally into a coastal break alongside Weymouth's beaches and the Chesil Beach itself. It's the sort of place that breaks up a holiday nicely rather than filling a whole day, but on a grey Dorset morning when the light's good, there's real magic in it.
