Sandsfoot Castle

The ruins of a Tudor fortress sit right on the shingle at Rodwell, commanding views across Weymouth Bay that would have made it a properly strategic spot in the 1500s. Henry VIII had this place built to defend against French invasion, and you can still see why - the bastioned design and angle of the walls suggest someone who knew their business. What remains today are the lower sections and bastions, enough to give you a real sense of how it was laid out, though the upper works have long since crumbled into the sea.

It's a short walk from Weymouth and works best for anyone keen on coastal history or fortifications. You won't need more than thirty minutes to look around, and it's free - just turn up and have a wander. The shingle beach here is functional rather than beautiful, and the wind can be bracing, but that's part of the charm. Families with young kids might find it a bit sparse unless they're already castle enthusiasts.

If you're staying at Chesil Beach Lodge Park or any of the Weymouth-area sites, Sandsfoot makes an easy morning detour before heading inland. Pair it with a walk along the beach itself or pop into Weymouth proper for lunch. It won't take you out of your way, and on a clear day the views are worth standing around for a bit. Don't expect crowds - that's precisely the appeal.
