About RSPB Marshside
There are observation hides dotted around the reserve, which is the whole point really. You stand there, silent, watching lapwings and avocets and whatever else the tide has brought in. On a good day the activity is constant. On a quiet day you'll hear nothing but wind through the reeds and wonder if you should have gone to Southport Pier instead.
It's free to wander the trails, though donations to the RSPB are obviously welcome. Allow a couple of hours minimum if you're serious about it, longer if you've got decent optics and patience. Spring and autumn migrations are prime time, though winter can be surprisingly productive for spotting overwintering species.
For caravan holidays, you're well placed. Southport Caravan and Motorhome Club Campsite is only three miles away, with Riverside Holiday Park just as close. After Marshside you could easily head into Southport proper for the arcades and seaside stuff, or make for the dunes at Formby. It works best if you're already interested in birds - don't expect it to entertain the kids if they're not.
