RSPB Lodmoor

Kids under ten might lose interest after thirty minutes unless they're genuinely into birds, but anyone with a scope and patience could happily spend half a day here. The walk is manageable - nothing steep, mostly flat paths around the water. Best visited during migration seasons (spring and autumn) when there's actual variety to spot.

Free access and run by the RSPB, so there's no entry fee to worry about. The reserve sits just outside Overcombe, making it a short drive from the holiday parks clustered around Weymouth. Bring proper footwear rather than flip-flops - it gets boggy after rain. If the weather's grey and blustery, the wind can make viewing tricky, so pick a calmer day if you can. Honestly, for a quieter counter-balance to the seafront crowds, it's well worth an hour or two.
