RSPB Fowlmere Nature Reserve

The chalk streams running through Fowlmere near Royston are the real draw here - clear, cold water that supports everything from water voles to rare aquatic plants. This RSPB reserve sits bang in the middle of some of East Anglia's most understated countryside, and it's genuinely quiet.

There's a proper walking trail that takes you along the water's edge, with hides positioned to watch wildfowl without spooking them. Bring binoculars. The reserve does best in spring and autumn when migration is on - you'll see warblers, redstarts, and if you're lucky, something rarer drifting through. Summer can feel a bit thin for birdlife, if I'm honest, though dragonflies make up for it. Winter works too if you don't mind the cold.

This isn't a dramatic destination. There are no dramatic cliffs or spectacular viewpoints. What you get instead is a chance to move slowly through a landscape that barely changes from footstep to footstep - and that's precisely why it works. Families with young children might find an hour enough; serious birdwatchers could spend half a day here without complaint.
