RSPB Culbin Sands

The moment you step onto Culbin Sands, you're struck by how vast it all feels. This RSPB reserve sprawls across a massive shale bar jutting into the Moray Firth, near Nairn, and it's genuinely wild - the kind of place where you can walk for ages without seeing another soul.

What you're actually looking at is a constantly shifting landscape of shale, sand and saltmarsh that's absolutely brilliant for birdwatching. Waders, terns, and plovers turn up regularly depending on the season, and if you're lucky you'll spot something scarcer blown in off the North Sea. Even non-birders find it hypnotic - the light's extraordinary, especially in late afternoon when the water catches it properly.

Walkers come here and stay for hours. The paths are straightforward enough, though the terrain's loose underfoot in places and it gets windier than you'd expect. Bring binoculars and proper footwear. It's free to access, and there's no strict visiting hours - just turn up, though dawn and dusk are genuinely the best times for spotting birds.

For a longer Highland break, it pairs well with time at Barrow Campsite just a few miles away in Nairn itself. An hour here is decent, but really you want two hours minimum to get a feel for it and have a proper look around. Spring migration and autumn are peak times, though there's always something to see. It's not flashy or touristy, which is precisely why it works.
