RSPB Carngafallt

Bird watching in the Elan Valley means heading up to Carngafallt, a wild stretch of moorland where red kites circle overhead and you've got a proper chance of spotting buzzards, hen harriers, and the occasional golden eagle if you're lucky. The RSPB manages this site specifically because it matters - the upland habitat here supports some seriously good birdlife that you won't see in gentler countryside. Spring and early summer are prime - the birds are vocal and active, and the weather's less likely to close in unexpectedly. Rhayader is your nearest town, about half an hour's drive away, which makes this a cracking add-on if you're basing yourselves at one of the caravan parks nearby. Elan Oaks is barely a mile away, making it perfect for a quick early morning or late afternoon visit without hassle. Families with keen young naturalists will get something genuine from this - it's not theme park entertainment, it's real wildlife watching in proper hill country. Casual visitors might find the lack of facilities and infrastructure a bit stark, but that's rather the point. This is where the landscape belongs to the birds, and you're just passing through their world.
