Royall & Son Boat Yard

The Broads around Wroxham are where you come to mess about in boats, and Royall & Son is the real deal - a proper working boatyard that's been doing this for generations. You'll see wooden and fibreglass craft at various stages of repair, mooring buoys stretching along the water, and the kind of organised chaos that only happens when people genuinely know what they're doing. It's not a manicured visitor attraction with gift shops. It's a working yard, which is precisely why it's worth a look if you're into boats or simply want to understand how the Broads actually function.

The appeal here is fairly specific. Walkers and boat enthusiasts will find it absorbing - there's something compelling about watching craftspeople at work, and the riverside setting is lovely. Families with young children might find ten minutes enough unless they're seriously into maritime stuff. Photography is decent if the light's right, though you'll want to be respectful about where you point a camera in an active work space.

If you're based at Norfolk Broads Caravan and Motorhome Club Campsite or Dilham Hall Retreats - both excellent spots just a few miles out - you can easily pop into Wroxham itself, grab a coffee, and wander down to the yard without much effort. The whole area rewards a slow, curious approach rather than ticking boxes. Allow an hour if you're genuinely interested, less if you're just passing through. No admission fee as far as I'm aware, though always worth asking before you show up.
