Rousham House and Gardens

Walking through the gates at Rousham feels like stepping backwards about three centuries without the discomfort of the period. This is a working country house with gardens designed by William Kent in the 1730s, and it's genuinely one of the best-preserved examples of his landscape work you'll find anywhere. The house itself remains a family home - no velvet ropes or corporate feel - which gives the whole place an authentic, lived-in atmosphere that most grand estates have lost.

The real draw is the garden. It's not vast, but it's intricately laid out with careful sightlines, water features, and scattered follies that reward wandering. The Venus Vale is particularly good, and there's a proper working kitchen garden where you can see what's actually being grown. Allow two to three hours if you want to do it properly without rushing.

This is ideal for people who care about garden design and 18th-century landscape history - walkers too, though it's not enormous. History enthusiasts will appreciate the house itself. Families with young kids might find it a touch dull after an hour, as there's not much interactive stuff on offer. Rousham sits nicely between Kidlington and some decent caravan parks - Greenhill Leisure Park is well-rated and only four miles away, making it a sensible stop if you're basing yourself in the area for a few days. The house and gardens are well worth a morning or afternoon if you're already exploring Oxfordshire.
