Round Hill

Standing at 516 metres, this prominent summit on the Long Mynd offers one of the finest viewpoints in the Shropshire Hills. The climb up from Church Stretton is a proper workout - about an hour of steady walking through heather moorland - but the panoramic views across the Severn Valley make every step worthwhile. On a clear day you can see right across to the Welsh mountains, with the distinctive outline of Caer Caradoc dominating the eastern horizon.

Walkers and hill runners will love this place. The approach from Church Stretton follows well-marked bridleways, though it's definitely not pushchair territory given the steep gradients and rough moorland paths. Families with older children who don't mind a hike will find it rewarding, but little ones might struggle with the distance.

Being open moorland, Round Hill is accessible year-round and completely free. Allow at least three hours for the return journey from town, including time to soak up those views at the top. Weather can change quickly up here, so pack layers even on sunny days.
