Rough Down

The walk up Rough Down takes about forty minutes from the car park, and it's a proper slog in summer heat, but the effort pays off. You're rewarded with views across the Vale of Pewsey that stretch for miles - north towards Marlborough, west towards Devizes. On a clear day you can clock the Wiltshire landscape folding away in all directions, ancient and somehow still wild despite the farmland dotting it.

It's a chalk downland site, so the turf is springy underfoot and the slopes steep enough to get your thighs working. The summit itself is modest - no grand monument or shelter, just a high point where the view opens up. Walkers will love it. Families with younger kids might find the climb tiresome without a decent payoff at the top beyond the view. History types should know this is part of the Wiltshire Downs chalk country, riddled with Bronze Age burial mounds and Iron Age forts nearby.

Go early in the day if possible, especially summer weekends, or the car park fills fast. Allow two hours total for the round trip if you're not a rapid walker. The surrounding area is ideal for longer downland walks - you can link this with other peaks on the ridge.

Staying at one of the nearby camps - Brades Acre or Country View are both solid options within five miles - gives you easy access to this and the broader downland walking network. Mill Farm Glamping is pricier but genuinely lovely if you want a more comfortable base.
