One Tree Hill

The walk up One Tree Hill, just outside Devizes, takes about twenty minutes from the car park and rewards you with proper views across the Wiltshire valleys. It's not a dramatic climb - the path is well-trodden and fairly gentle - but the sight of the landscape spreading out below is genuinely good. On a clear day you can see for miles. The single beech tree at the summit gives the place its name, and it's become something of a local spot for sunset watching.

Walkers will find this a cracking hour's outing, especially if you're basing yourself at one of the nearby sites like Mill Farm Glamping or the Devizes Camping and Caravanning Club Site. It's exactly the sort of thing to do between breakfast and lunch without eating the whole day. Families with children who can manage gentle slopes will get on fine with it - the path is sensible and there's a real sense of achievement when you reach the top, even though the climb isn't challenging.

There's no entrance fee that I'm aware of, and no facilities at the summit itself, so bring water if it's warm. The best time is early morning or late afternoon when the light is warmer and you'll have fewer people mucking about. Worth the detour from Devizes if you're staying in the area for a few days - it's the kind of low-key viewpoint that makes a decent holiday walk without any fuss.
