Rothesay Castle

The moment you spot Rothesay Castle from the seafront, you'll understand why this 13th-century fortress has defended the Isle of Bute for nearly 800 years. The circular stone walls are genuinely impressive - that distinctive medieval design meant defenders could cover every angle without blind spots. Inside, you can clamber up the narrow staircase to the ramparts, where views across the Firth of Clyde open up properly. The castle's seen some hammering over the centuries: the walls bear scars from siege cannons, and whole sections were rebuilt after damage. It's not a sprawling ruin - the circuit takes about 45 minutes at a relaxed pace - but that makes it manageable for families with younger kids, though the spiral staircase will test their stamina.

Walkers and anyone with an interest in Scottish medieval history will find genuine value here. The castle tells a proper story through its structure, from the austere Norman keep to later additions. On a clear day, the views alone justify the visit.
