Rossie Village (ruins)

The scattered stones of Rossie Village sit quietly in the Perthshire countryside, about three miles south of Cupar, and you'll need to know where you're looking to spot them. What remains is essentially a collection of ruined cottages and farm buildings from a settlement that's mostly been reclaimed by grass and brambles - nothing dramatic, but genuinely atmospheric if you're into social history.

Walking the site tells a story of rural abandonment. You can make out foundation lines, bits of wall, the occasional window frame. It's the kind of place that makes you wonder what life looked like for people working these holdings two centuries ago. The ruins don't demand more than 30 minutes unless you're sketching or taking a serious number of photographs. The walk in from the nearest lane is easy enough, though it's not signposted so you do need to come armed with a map or decent directions.

This is squarely for history enthusiasts and walkers rather than families after a straightforward afternoon out - kids will probably lose interest once the novelty of clambering on old stones wears off. If you're based at South Valleyfield Certificated Site (members only for caravans, no tents), Rossie makes a decent ramble if you're keen on seeing how settlements like this vanished. It's not a destination that'll anchor a park holiday on its own, but combined with Cupar's town trails or other Fife sites nearby, it's worth the diversion.
