Rosenannon Downs

Rolling moorland north of Wadebridge that feels genuinely wild once you're out on it. Rosenannon Downs is a proper expanse of open countryside where you can actually breathe, which sounds daft until you've spent the afternoon crushed between other visitors at more famous Cornish spots.

It's less a formal attraction and more a working landscape - rough grassland, gorse, and the occasional wind-bent tree. You come here to walk, to clear your head, maybe to spot the occasional buzzard. The views sweep across to the valley beyond and on a clear day you get proper horizons. Don't expect facilities or manicured paths. This is the thing itself.

Walkers will get the most out of it. Families with young children might find it a bit open and exposed - there's nowhere to hide if the weather turns, and the terrain isn't forgiving in mud. But if your kids enjoy proper adventuring rather than attractions, they'll love the freedom of space.

It's free to access and you can spend as little as an hour or half the day up there depending on how far you roam. Spring and early summer are best when the gorse flowers yellow and the light stays long.

If you're based at The Laurels or Trewan Hall nearby, this is your local walk - worth doing before heading to busier spots like Padstow or the beaches around Porthilly. It's the antidote to peak-season tourism.
