Roman Wall

The Roman Wall in Colchester is one of England's most substantial surviving Roman structures, and it's genuinely impressive when you stand against it. Built around 70 AD to defend the settlement of Camulodunum, sections of the wall still rise to nearly 30 feet in places - that's proper Roman engineering on display.

You can walk stretches of the wall throughout Colchester town centre, which makes it easy to fit into a broader visit. The northern section near St Botolph's Priory is the most dramatic, where the flint and stone coursework is still clearly visible after nearly two millennia. History buffs will spend a good hour tracing the route and imagining how the walls once enclosed the entire settlement.

It's free to access and available whenever you fancy a walk - no ticketing or opening hours to worry about. The wall weaves through modern Colchester, so you're constantly switching between ancient monuments and everyday town life, which is either charming or jarring depending on your view of it all.
