The Roman settlement here sprawls across fields just outside Tadcaster, and there's something oddly moving about walking where soldiers once marched. This wasn't some grand fort - it was a vicus, a civilian trading post that grew up beside the military stronghold, full of shops, taverns, and ordinary people making a living on the frontier. What you see now are earthworks and archaeological traces rather than standing stone, so you need a bit of imagination to picture it properly.

The site rewards walkers and history types far more than casual visitors after a quick photo. You can trace the street layout if you know what to look for, and the scale of the place becomes clear as you wander - it stretched further than most people expect for a settlement this far north. There's no visitor centre or interpretation boards, which feels authentic but means doing a bit of homework beforehand helps enormously.
