Roman Theatre

The Roman Theatre sits right in the heart of Colchester, a town that was once Camulodunum, the Romans' first capital in Britain. What you're looking at is genuinely one of only a handful of Roman theatres still standing in the country - the remains rise from the ground like a half-buried secret, with stone seating still visible in places. It's easy to walk past and miss it entirely, which is partly why it feels special.

You can wander the site freely and get a proper sense of the scale - the theatre once held around 8,000 people, which gives you an idea of how important this place was. The stone work itself is fragmentary but atmospheric, especially on a quieter afternoon when you can actually imagine the roar of the crowd. History buffs will lose an hour here easily; families with younger kids might find it a bit abstract after twenty minutes unless they're already interested in Romans.

The site sits a short walk from Colchester town centre, so it's straightforward to reach from any of the caravan parks in the area - Colchester Country Park is barely a mile away. There's no admission fee and no set opening hours that I could find, which means you can visit early morning or dusk if you prefer. The surrounding streets are proper urban Colchester, which takes a bit of the romance out of it, but that's archaeology for you. Pop in while you're exploring the town itself rather than making it a destination journey. It's the kind of spot that makes you grateful the Romans left anything behind at all.
