Roman Sea Bank

The Roman Sea Bank stands as a long, grass-covered ridge running through the flat Cambridgeshire fenland east of Wisbech - a genuine piece of Roman engineering that's been doing its job for nearly 2,000 years. Walk along it and you're literally treading on what the occupiers built to hold back tidal waters, a defence system that still influences the landscape today.

It's not dramatic. There are no visitor facilities, no signage telling you what you're looking at, no café. What you get instead is a proper sense of place - the kind of thing archaeology enthusiasts and landscape historians will find genuinely absorbing. The flat terrain means you can see for miles, and that's precisely the point. This bank was about control and survival in an unforgiving environment.

Walkers will appreciate it most, though families with older children who've studied Romans at school might find it clicks into place here in a way textbooks never manage. Allow an hour or so to walk a decent stretch without rushing. There's no admission charge - it's just land you can access and explore.

If you're staying at one of the nearby parks - Glamping with Llamas just 1.5 miles away is excellent value, or Parklands Holidays for something more traditional - this makes a solid morning's outing. It won't occupy a full day, but combined with a walk around Wisbech itself or a visit to nearby attractions, it slots into a fenland holiday rather well. Best visited on a clear day when the views open up properly.
