Roman Fort - Praesidium

The remains of Praesidium sit quietly on the Yorkshire landscape near Tadcaster, a Roman auxiliary fort that once guarded this stretch of the north. What you're looking at are earthworks and the occasional stone foundation - don't expect marble columns or intact walls. This is proper archaeology: subtle ridges in the ground that mark where barracks, the commandant's house, and the granary stood nearly two thousand years ago.

It's the kind of place that rewards a slow walk rather than a quick visit. Walkers and history types will find it genuinely interesting, especially if you've got decent kit to help you visualise the fort's layout. The earthworks are still quite legible if you know what to look for, and there's something rather moving about standing where Roman soldiers once stood. Kids under twelve will probably lose interest after twenty minutes unless they're keen on digging into history already.

The site is free to access and takes about an hour if you're methodical. There's no visitor centre or facilities - bring water. Best visited on a clear day when the light catches the earthworks properly.
