Roman Fort

The Roman Fort near Coleford is one of those sites where you'll find yourself standing in a field, squinting at earthwork ridges, trying to picture what was actually here two thousand years ago. It's not dramatic - no standing stones, no reconstructed gates - but if you're into Roman Britain or enjoy following old military installations, it's genuinely worth a detour.

What you're looking at are the remains of a fort built to control the Forest of Dean and protect Roman interests in the region. The fortifications are mostly visible as ground-level banks and ditches now, which means you'll need some imagination and ideally a good guidebook to make sense of it all. It's the kind of place where the history buff will spend an hour mapping out the headquarters and barracks, while someone after a quick photo stop will be done in fifteen minutes.

Solitary walkers and families with older kids tend to get the most from it - there's usually space to wander about freely, and the surrounding countryside is decent for stretching your legs. Bring sturdy shoes if it's been wet; the site can get boggy. It's free to visit as far as I can tell, though details seem thin on the ground online.

Stay at Doward Park or Bracelands Campsite nearby, both within three miles, and you can pair this with Forest of Dean walks and stronger Roman sites elsewhere in Gloucestershire. It's proper off the beaten track, which is exactly why it works.
