Kymin Tower

The walk up to Kymin Tower rewards you properly - a Victorian folly rising from the Forest of Dean scrubland with views that stretch across the Wye Valley and into Wales. It's not a grand structure, just a sturdy stone tower built in the 1820s, but the views from the top make the climb worthwhile.

Getting there means a decent hike through decent woodland from Coleford. The path isn't punishing, but it's not a casual stroll either - allow a good hour if you're taking it steady. Once you reach the tower, the countryside opens up below you. On a clear day you can see for miles; on a grey one, it's moody and atmospheric.

Walkers will get the most from this. The views are the entire point, so you need decent weather to justify the effort. Kids might find the tower itself interesting for twenty minutes, but they'll need to be the type who enjoy proper walking rather than quick stops.

It works well as part of a wider Forest of Dean exploration. Bracelands Campsite is just two miles away, making it an easy morning or afternoon outing from your base. Greenacres and Doward Park campsites are equally close if you're staying in the immediate area. The tower itself is free to visit - no admission charge, no opening hours that we can pin down. Just turn up, walk up, and take in the view. Best visited in autumn or winter when the trees are thin and the light is proper clear.
