About Roman Camp

The earthworks at Roman Camp sit on a gentle slope just outside Callander, and once you know what you're looking at, they're genuinely impressive - those ditches and ramparts were dug nearly two thousand years ago by legionaries working their way through Scotland. Walking the perimeter takes about twenty minutes if you're pottering about, longer if you're the type to stop and imagine what the view would have meant to the soldiers stationed here.

It's not a visitor centre with reconstructions or interactive exhibits. What you get is the actual landscape - grass-covered banks and hollows that show you exactly how the Romans built their marching camps. That's either brilliant or a bit underwhelming depending on what you're after. History types with a decent imagination will find it absorbing. Kids under ten will likely get restless unless you frame it as a hill to climb and run about on.

The site is free and accessible any time you can reach it on foot. There's a small car park at the entrance - ask locally in Callander for directions, as signage is sparse. Allow thirty minutes minimum, an hour if you're sketching or taking photographs.

If you're staying at Callander Woods or Keltie Bridge, this makes a decent morning walk before heading to bigger attractions. It's not a destination in itself, but it adds a proper bit of depth to a Scottish holiday that might otherwise be all Loch Lomond and shop visits.
