Inchmahome Priory

Getting to Inchmahome Priory means a short ferry ride across the Lake of Menteith - and that crossing is half the charm. You're paddled out to an island where medieval ruins rise from the grass, all crumbling arches and weathered stone that's been standing since the 13th century. The priory itself is small but atmospheric, with enough left to piece together what monastic life looked like here centuries ago. The cloister is largely intact, and you can wander through the remains picking out details - a carved capital here, a window frame there.

Historically minded visitors will get the most from this one. It's not the sort of place for running about; kids might manage twenty minutes before restlessness sets in. But if you're the type who enjoys reading plaques and imagining what happened where, it's genuinely affecting. Mary Queen of Scots sheltered here as a child, which adds a layer of intrigue.

The journey takes a good couple of hours including the ferry waits and the wander about. It's peaceful, properly so - you'll likely have the island mostly to yourself. Pop over from Callander itself, which is just down the road and has decent facilities. If you're staying at Callander Woods or Keltie Bridge Caravan Park, it makes a solid half-day out before heading back for supper. The priory won't blow your mind, but it's the kind of quiet spot that settles in your memory.
