Roman Camp

The earthworks sprawl across moorland near Otterburn like a faint scar you'd miss if you weren't looking for it. This is a Roman camp - one of several dotted through Northumberland - and what you're actually standing in are the defensive ditches and ramparts that soldiers threw up nearly two thousand years ago. It's not dramatic. There are no standing structures, no reconstructed gates or garrison buildings. What you get instead is the archaeology of it: the physical proof that Rome's legions marched this far north and dug in.

Historians and serious walkers will get the most from this. You need to understand what you're looking at, which means either reading up beforehand or going with someone who knows their Roman military engineering. The site sits on open moorland - proper exposed country - so it's atmospheric on a grey afternoon but can be brutal in wind. Allow an hour if you're making a deliberate trip, less if you're passing through on a longer walk.

Practically, this is free and unmanaged. You can visit anytime. The nearest proper base is Border Forest Holiday Park, just 3.6 miles away, which makes it a reasonable add-on if you're staying in the area exploring Hadrian's Wall country. Don't expect this to entertain kids for long unless they're genuinely keen on Romans. It's too subtle for that. But if you're interested in how Rome actually controlled Britain, stepping through those ditches is something special.
