Bremenium Roman Fort

The ruins of a Roman fort sit on moorland near Otterburn, commanding views across Redesdale. What you're looking at are the foundations and ditches of Bremenium, a military outpost built around 80 AD to guard the road north into Scotland. It's not dramatic - no towering walls or reconstructed buildings - but the layout is clear enough if you know what you're looking at. The fort's edges are marked by earthworks, and you can make out where the commander's house, barracks and granaries once stood.

This is one for history buffs and walkers rather than families after a quick photo stop. Allow 45 minutes to an hour to pick around the site and get a proper sense of the scale. The moorland setting is genuinely atmospheric, particularly on grey days when you can almost picture legionaries drilling in the wind. Bring a guidebook or download information before you arrive - interpretation on site is minimal, which is actually quite refreshing.

Admission appears to be free and you can visit any time. It's a sensible addition to a walking holiday based at Border Forest Holiday Park or the glamping at GlamPods, both only a few miles away. The landscape around here rewards exploration - Redesdale has excellent trails, and the fort sits within proper wild country. Don't expect crowds or facilities. What you get is solitude, archaeology and moorland in generous measure.
