Rocky Valley

The coastal path drops steeply toward Rocky Valley, a proper slice of unspoilt Cornish coastline near Bodmin that most tourists miss entirely. You're walking through dense woodland one minute, then suddenly the valley opens out - sheer cliffs, a pebbly cove, and that particular shade of turquoise water you only get when Atlantic light hits shallow granite shelves just right.

It's a nature reserve, which means it's been left largely alone. The river meets the sea here, creating a strange hybrid ecosystem where freshwater pools sit metres from salt spray. Rock pools are genuinely excellent if you time it for low tide - proper anemones, crabs that don't run away immediately, the works. The woodland trails themselves are steep in places and muddy even when it's been dry, so proper boots matter.

Walkers will love this more than families with small children. There's no amenity block, nowhere to grab a pasty, no interpretive signs telling you what you're looking at. You get the valley as it is - which is exactly why it's worth the drive. Allow a good two hours if you're doing the full loop and exploring the cove properly. Summer weekends can see a few visitors, but midweek in May or September you might have the place almost to yourself.
