Rockingham Castle

The castle sits on a steep ridge above the River Welland, and you'll know you've found it when the Norman keep comes into view across the fields. Rockingham is the real deal - built by William the Conqueror himself around 1065, and it still feels like a fortress rather than some prettified stately home. The grounds sprawl across eight acres, which gives you proper room to wander without feeling herded around like cattle.

Inside, the rooms tell stories of actual people who lived here - not just dusty exhibits. The weapons, the furnishings, the portraits all sit in the spaces where families actually moved about. If you've got kids, they'll spend a fair while clambering on the ramparts and imagining siege scenarios. Adults who care about medieval architecture will find plenty to chew on, particularly the keep itself and the later Elizabethan additions.
