Rockham Beach

Wild Atlantic swells crash against jagged slate shelves where Rockham Beach reveals itself as Devon's most dramatic coastal stage. This isn't your typical bucket-and-spade destination - the rocky foreshore and powerful currents make it better suited to experienced walkers and photographers than families with young children.

About a mile south of Woolacombe's main sands, Rockham demands a proper clifftop hike to reach. The reward? Spectacular views across to Lundy Island and some of the most powerful surf displays you'll witness on this stretch of coast. Rock pooling enthusiasts will find plenty to explore among the granite platforms, though the terrain requires sure footing.

Surf photographers particularly love this spot for its raw, uncompromising character. When the tide's right and the swell's running, it's absolutely cracking for capturing Devon's wilder side. The beach works best at low tide when the rock formations are fully exposed.

Staying at one of the nearby holiday parks like Woolacombe Bay or Golden Coast makes this an excellent addition to a North Devon coastal tour. Just don't expect facilities - this is proper wild swimming and scrambling territory. Allow two hours for the round trip from Woolacombe village, and check tide times before setting off. The walk back up those cliffs is bit of a slog, but the views make it well worth the effort.
