Rockbourne Recreation Ground

The Avon Valley near Salisbury holds some genuinely rewarding walking country, and Rockbourne Recreation Ground is where you'll find yourself actually stopping to look around rather than just trudging through. It's a proper nature reserve that straddles the Dorset-Hampshire border, with open grassland, woodland, and genuine wetland habitat that attracts everything from kingfishers to rare dragonflies if you time it right.

Time your visit for spring or early summer and you'll catch the wetland coming alive. Late afternoon in autumn is lovely too - fewer visitors, better light. Allow an hour minimum if you want to properly explore the reserve rather than dash through it.
