Whitsbury Castle

The Iron Age hill fort sits about three miles south of Salisbury, commanding views across the Dorset chalkland. You're looking at a proper defensive position - two concentric ditches still visible, ramparts that would have made sense 2,000 years ago. The walk up takes maybe twenty minutes from the car park, nothing strenuous, and once you're on top it's properly atmospheric. On a clear day you can see for miles. The site itself is free to wander, though there's no interpretation board or visitor facilities - just you, the archaeology, and the chalk slopes.

Walkers get the most from this one. You could spend an hour here, longer if you're into Iron Age settlement patterns and want to read the landscape carefully. Families with younger kids might find it a bit abstract - there are no reconstructions or hands-on bits, just earthworks and open field. History buffs will spend longer, tracing the ditches and working out sightlines to neighbouring forts. The views alone justify the detour if you're between Salisbury and Fordingbridge.

It's a decent addition to a park-based week in the area. Summerlands Caravan Park sits closest at 2.6 miles, so you could easily combine this with village walks around Coombe or exploring the test Valley. Spring and early summer are best - wet winter months turn the slopes slippery. Allow an hour total from car to summit and back, more if you're methodical.
