Robin's Wood

Deep woodland walks and a proper working sawmill - that's what Robin's Wood near Cranbrook delivers. It's the kind of place where you can actually hear yourself think, surrounded by Kentish trees with genuine character rather than manicured park paths. The working sawmill is the main draw here, where you can watch timber being cut using traditional methods. It's genuinely engaging if you're into that sort of thing, though kids might find it fascinating for twenty minutes rather than two hours.

Walkers will find real value in the forest trails themselves. They're not massively dramatic - this is the Weald, not the Pennines - but they wind through proper old woodland with plenty of moss-covered logs and shaded spots. It's the kind of walk where you spot birds, spot peace, spot very little else. The space feels genuinely remote despite being close to Cranbrook.

Give it a couple of hours if you're combining it with other attractions nearby. It works well as a morning outing before heading to Glassenbury Camping or The Original Hut Company if you're staying in the area. Families with younger kids might struggle unless they're genuinely keen on woodland walks - there's limited infrastructure and not much to do beyond walking and watching. But if you want a dose of working Kent countryside without the theme park feel, this scratches that itch. Best visited when it's not raining, because muddy forest paths lose their charm fairly quickly.
